What He Said (4/12-4/18)

Reporting on boys' death hits a nerve, Rez schools chief out, and local woman honored for pursuit of social justice.

The story: A 17-year-old Flagstaff boy dies suddenly at a sleepover.
The responses: Several posters lashed out at the unpleasant news: "incredibly inaccurate" (RR); "enormous ammount of inaccurate information" (av); "The suggestion is that this young man died of an alcohol or drug overdose. No facts are given to support these notions." (jbd) A police officer's observation that the home smelled of alcohol seemed the springboard for many of the angry comments. The death remains under investigation.

The story:
The Tuba City Unified School District Governing Board votes to oust its financially embattled superintendent.
The responses:
Among other reported, questionable financial moves, Eugene Thomas handed out raises to two administrators at the Navajo Nation district. "It's about time that the board finally acts to do the right thing by putting Mr. Thomas on leave," wrote TC Parent. "If anyone deserves raises, it should be the teachers not top administrators." Flag. said. "Glad to see that the community came out and voice their concern about their children's education."

The story:
Local activist promotes a progressive, green lifestyle, wins a humanitarian award for organizing counter-protests to pro-life demonstrators outside Planned Parenthood.
The responses:
Lisa Rayner, a frequent letter writer and azdailysun.com poster, was on the other side of the comments this time. She received congratulations. She received scorn ("Lisa you need Jesus," from the similarly named Lisa needs Jesus). From one Anon, she got defense: "Congratulations Lisa, I don't always agree with you, but I appreciate your energy and contributions to Flagstaff."
